Kid Fun in Grown-Up Museums

Art museums are smart. They know that in terms of creativity and imagination, kids have a lot in common with the artists featured on their walls. To acclimate kids to new ways of looking and discussing what they see, grown-up museums are tailoring programs to young people and their families. It's a great way to groom future museum-goers and artists.

Founded in 1977 as the New York Experimental Glass Workshop and located in downtown Brooklyn since 1991, UrbanGlass promotes interest in glass art through exhibitions in its Robert Lehman Gallery and the publication of GLASS magazine. Glass in all its glory is on view at it studio, from the wall-of-glass lobby to the window wall, which allows viewers to watch neon-bending and lamp working. Artists can learn glassmaking through residencies, workshops and access to furnaces and equipment.

UrbanGlass is an international center for the creation and appreciation of new art made of glass. It is the largest glassworking studio in the world, occupying 17,000 square feet, and is open to any qualified artist who wants to rent time and equipment there. Visitors to the studio may watch glass being blown, see the most delightful products of those efforts in the studio's Robert Lehman Gallery or purchase newly blown glass art in the gift shop.

  • Disability Access: Fully accessible
  • Gift Shops: Small decorative glass items
