New York City Center, Manhattan's landmark performing arts center, is famous as a home for all types of performing arts, among them leading American dance companies such as Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Paul Taylor Dance Company. The center also hosts visiting companies from cities in the United States and abroad. In addition, New York City Center presents such programs as its acclaimed musical theater series, Encores! Great American Musicals in Concert, and offers a variety of attractions focusing on indigenous American art forms.
New York City Center is also home to the distinguished Manhattan Theatre Club (see separate entry), which occupies the smaller Stage I and II spaces downstairs. Constructed in 1924 as the Mecca Temple by the Shriners, New York City Center has served as a home for the performing arts since 1943, when Mayor Fiorello La Guardia saved the building from demolition and designated it a "people's theater" and "cultural center for all New Yorkers."
