Children will feel at home at the New York City Opera, founded in 1944, which offers the brightest new talents from among young American singers, conductors and stage directors. City Opera has always tried to make accessibility (of price, language and theatrical interest) as important as the musical quality for which it is well-known. Foreign language works are offered with English supertitles—translations of the libretto projected above the stage. City Opera nurtures young American artists and promotes recent work, while making opera accessible to new and diverse audiences through its eclectic productions and affordable prices.
The last half-decade has seen the development of an education and outreach program that reaches 12,000 students in 75 schools every year.
