One of the nation's oldest music schools, the Brooklyn-Queens Conservatory of Music was founded in 1897 and was originally located in the opera house now belonging to the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The conservatory now has two facilities in Brooklyn and one in Flushing, Queens where a full schedule of free and low-cost concerts, lectures and musical instruction to everyone regardless of age or experience are offered. Enrolled students study jazz, piano, voice, orchestral instruments, theory or composition toward either a two-year or a four-year diploma.
A small landscaped garden in the back of the brownstone building includes benches.
