Alpha Omega 1-7 Theatrical Dance Company maintains a performing company of 10 to 12 dancers who are coached, trained and refined under the artistic direction of Enrique Cruz DeJesus and perform for schools, universities, festivals, special events, senior citizens events and tours.
The company’s mission is largely educational. After its founding in 1972, it ran a small space on the Lower East Side of Manhattan where it gave free dance classes to children. With the success of that program the company expanded to include children at select schools around the city—Freedom Academy High School and Lewis H. Latimer, both in Brooklyn; and East Harlem School at Exodus House and Martin Luther King Jr. High School, both in Manhattan—training them in various styles of dance.
In 2011 the company will occupy its newly renovated building on East 4th Street.
