Appropriately located in the world's foremost vertical metropolis, the museum is dedicated to the study of tall buildings as objects of design, products of technology, sites of contruction, investments in real estate, places of work and residence and instances of aesthetic expression molded by these practical needs and forces.
Exhibitions have included Big Buildings, featuring photographs and other documents of 70 of the world's largest towers; Building the Empire State, highlighting the roles of the architects, builders and workers who constructed the great tower; and FUTURE CITY: 20 | 21 which juxtaposed a retrospective of early 20th-century American visions of the skyscraper city of the future with an exploration of Chinese cities today, pursuing the parallel conditions of rapid modernization and urbanization.
The Skyscraper Museum hosts Saturday Family Programs, featuring a variety of workshops introducing children and their families to the principles of architecture and engineering through hands-on activities.

Ongoing In addition to changing exhibits, models of Lower Manhattan and Midtown Manhattan, a section on the World Trade Center and rebuilding at Ground Zero, and maps and photographs of Lower Manhattan are on always on view.
My Community: Building Stories
Ongoing The museum has partnered with the Center for Architecture Foundation to provide a dual visit program. After a morning tour of the museum’s exhibition, students head to the Center for Architecture for a two-hour workshop in which students create three-dimensional models to explore issues in architecture, engineering, urban planning and sustainability.
