Orpheus was founded in 1972 by Julian Fifer and a group of fellow musicians who aspired to perform orchestral repertoire as chamber music—through their own close collaborative efforts and without a conductor.
The orchestra performs an annual season at Carnegie Hall and tours extensively in the United States.
