NYC Arts: The Complete Guide to Art and Culture

Philip Johnson designed this 2,800-seat theater, which is home to the New York City Ballet. The  theater occupies the south side of the main plaza of Lincoln Center, which it shares with the Metropolitan Opera House and Avery Fisher Hall. The auditorium features continental-style seating on the orchestra level, five balconies and a large spherical chandelier in the center of the gold-paneled ceiling. The lobby areas feature fine examples of modern art.

The New York City Ballet—founded in 1948 by George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein—is today one of the finest ballet companies in the world, maintaining a repertory of more than 150 works by Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Peter Martins and others.

• Directions: Subway: 1 to 66th Street/Lincoln Center. The theater is on the south side of the Lincoln Center Plaza.

• Disability Access: The David H. Koch Theater is fully accessible to people with disabilities. Infrared listening devices are available for the hearing-impaired free of charge at all performances. Listening devices can be picked up at the coat check. • Gift Shops: The City Opera Gift Shop, located on the Promenade level of the David H. Koch Theater, is open before performances and during each intermission. Its merchandise includes apparel, posters, gift items, recordings, libretti and much more.
• On-Site Food: Promenade bar offers coffee and light refreshments. Call 212-877-1652 for reservations. The Promenade Cafe opens two hours before each performance. New this season, the Promenade Cafe is open at 11:30 am before weekend matinees for cafeteria-style brunch service.
