This red brick building has always been some form or another of an atelier. Completed in 1879, by 1890 it contained the studios of painters Winslow Homer and Albert Pinkham Ryder and was a hub in the city's artistic life. In 1974, it was reestablished as a teaching gallery by NYU's Department of Art and Art Professions. Today, exhibitions of the work of masters candidates in studio art are mounted here as well as other shows, such as the annual Small Works exhibition.
