The foundation is the largest public institution in North America dedicated solely to Polish art. Rotating exhibitions—drawn from the permanent collection of oils, watercolors, prints, drawings, ceramics, sculpture, tapestries and photographs—are mounted in the second-floor gallery, the former ballroom of this neo-Renaissance mansion, which also serves as a concert and lecture hall. The large ballroom has surprisingly fine acoustics, that are well suited to the chamber music and solo recitals at the core of music programming here. The annual Chopin Piano Competition showcases young talent and was the site of early successes by Van Cliburn and Murray Perahia. The foundation opened in 1925 on the 150th anniversary of Thaddeus Kosciuszko's joining the American revolutionary cause.
