Founded in 1971, the Bronx Museum of the Arts is the leading fine art museum in the Bronx. It focuses on 20th-century and contemporary art, and mounts exhibitions on themes of special interest to its multi-ethnic constituency. The museum's permanent collection includes more than 600 works by artists of African, Asian and Latin-American ancestry. Special and public programs at the museum nurture creativity and stimulate participation in the arts. The museum offers professional development and an exhibition venue to emerging artists through its Artist in the Marketplace Program.
Its education programs provide instruction in art and media studies for teens and adults, interpretive art tours for school and community groups, and regular public programs that enhance understanding of contemporary art. In addition to mounting major exhibitions, the museum is committed to collaborating with local community groups for exhibitions on-site and at various nontraditional settings throughout the Bronx.
