NYC Arts: The Complete Guide to Art and Culture

Museum for African Art

Facility is not open to the public.

Since 1984, the Museum for African Art has presented exhibitions that bring the art of Africa to the attention of a growing public. The museum is also one of the foremost publishers on African art and has an active public education program.

The Center for African Art was founded on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in 1984. In 1993 the organization moved to larger quarters in SoHo and changed its name to the Museum for African Art. In 2002, the museum relocated to Long Island City in Queens, where it exhibited until 2006. The museum is currently holding its exhibitions and events in other New York City locations. Its future home at 1280 Fifth Avenue in East Harlem is under construction.
