The museum, which opened in October 2004, boasts a collection of more than 1,500 paintings and sculptures and other examples of art from the Himalayas and the surrounding regions dating from the 2nd to the 21st centuries.
The exhibitions are organized in a way that appeals both to art connoisseurs and the general public. Exhibitions include the historical, social and political contexts of the works and ExploreArt Galleries provides visitors with a behind-the-scenes look at how the art was originally made. Recent exhibitions at the museum have included Bardo: The Tibetan Art of Death; Visions of the Cosmos; and From the Land of the Gods (Nepalese art).
The Rubin Museum also hosts school programs, film screenings and concerts.
