Early Music Foundation (EMF) was founded by Frederick Renz and other members of the New York Pro Musica Antiqua in 1974. Upon its inception, EMF was invited to become Artist-in-Residence at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City.

The purpose of the Early Music Foundation is to foster public understanding and appreciation of western culture through the highest quality, historically informed performances of music and music drama from the 11th to the 18th centuries.

Early Music Foundation consists of a primary performing enterprise, Early Music New York - Frederick Renz, director, and a recording label, Ex cathedra Records. The EMF also serves as a nonprofit umbrella for its associate projects: New York Early Music Celebration, Parthenia- A Consort of Viols, and an online early music events calendar, Polyphony.com.
