Appropriately located in the world's foremost vertical metropolis, the museum is dedicated to the study of tall buildings as objects of design, products of technology, sites of contruction, investments in real estate, places of work and residence and instances of aesthetic expression  molded by these practical needs and forces.

Exhibitions have included Big Buildings, featuring photographs and other documents of 70 of the world's largest towers; Building the Empire State, highlighting the roles of the architects, builders and workers who constructed the great tower; and FUTURE CITY: 20 | 21 which juxtaposed a retrospective of early 20th-century American visions of the skyscraper city of the future with an exploration of Chinese cities today, pursuing the parallel conditions of rapid modernization and urbanization.

The Skyscraper Museum hosts Saturday Family Programs, featuring a variety of workshops introducing children and their families to the principles of architecture and engineering through hands-on activities.
