Gateway National Recreation Area is open year round from sunrise to sunset.

Every year, millions of people enjoy visiting the 26,000-acre Gateway National Recreation Area, which includes parts of three boroughs and two states, and is operated by the U.S. Department of the Interior. The components of the Gateway Recreation Area are: Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and Breezy Point in Queens; Floyd Bennett Field and Canarsie Pier in Brooklyn; Great Kills Park in Staten Island; and Sandy Hook in New Jersey.

Visitors to Breezy Point will want to see Fort Tilden, which has served as a major defense point for New York City since the War of 1812. Bird-lovers will enjoy the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, which attracts thousands of birds for the spring nesting season and the fall migration. Bikers can take advantage of the Brooklyn-Queens Bikeway that now runs through Floyd Bennett Field, which had once been New York's first municipal airport. Then there is the Sandy Hook lighthouse, the nation's oldest which is still in operation. These sites offer a wide range of activities and programs for public enjoyment.
