New York International Children’s Film Festival (NYICFF) is North America’s largest film festival for children and teens and stands at the forefront of a movement to define a new more provocative and relevant film for kids. Each year the festival programs the best new animation, live action and experimental film from around the world, with filmmaker Q&As, hands-on production workshops, red-carpet premieres, audience voting, and the NYICFF Awards.
The cornerstone of NYICFF's work is its annual three-week festival, held in theaters around New York City. The event is the largest of its kind in the country, showcasing a selective slate of new animation, live action, documentary and experimental films. NYICFF pursues its educational mission by introducing young audiences to a myriad of cultures, viewpoints and modes of artistic expression. The result is a multi-generational cultural event that attracts a growing audience of families, teens, educators and media professionals. Each festival is comprises about 45 ticketed events. Since 2000, all events have sold out in advance.
Founded by Eric Beckman and Emily Shapiro in 1997, NYICFF has grown from one weekend of films into the largest festival for youth in North America, with a jury comprised of film notables, including Susan Sarandon, Matthew Modine, Gus Van Sant, Peter Lord, Christine Vachon and Rob Minkoff.
Since its inception, NYICFF has presented 1,100 exceptional works of film for children and teens, including premieres of films by Hayao Miyazaki, Michel Ocelot, Katsuhiro Otomo, Danny Boyle, Josef Fares, Serge Ellisalde, Jean-Pierre Ameris, Santosh Sivan, Anders Klarund, Hiroyuki Morita and others.
