Chinatown is a familiar and popular place for millions of New Yorkers and tourists. It is also a symbol of the rich and complex Chinese-American experience, preserved and displayed at the Museum of Chinese in the Americas. Established in 1980, the museum celebrates Chinese-American history and culture, both in New York City and throughout the Americas. In addition to its permanent and ongoing exhibits, the museum maintains an archive (accessible by appointment only) of interest to adults and young people. It includes family photographs, theatrical memorabilia, early Chinese-American newspapers, old coaching books to help immigrants grapple with formerly strict immigration quotas, and numerous oral history tapes.
The museum's new location is in a space designed by Maya Lin.
