What is Shabbat? What were Abraham's 10 tests of faith? What makes Israel so special to the Jewish people? These questions and many more are answered at the Jewish Children's Museum, an interactive museum where children and families of all faiths can experience Jewish history, tradition and culture.
Opened in Crown Heights in 2005, the 50,000-square-foot museum designed by Gwathmey, Siegel & Assosicates is divided into two main sections, each featuring large dioramas, video presentations and activities. Exploring Jewish Life includes explanations of the shabbath, holidays, keeping kosher and more, and A Voyage Through Jewish History traces Jewish history from biblical times to to the present day. A third section takes a more whimsical approach to education, including a Noah's Ark playroom for toddlers, a miniature golf course that takes children on a journey through the milestones of Jewish life, and a game show studio which pits visitors against one another to answer questions about Jewish life a la televison's Jeopardy and Wheel of Fourtune.
In addition to the more than 80 exhibits, the museum also features a lending library, a screening room, arts and crafts studios, a banquet hall and more, all of which are made available for use by the community.
