Founded in 1983, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana is one of the nation's premier flamenco and Spanish dance companies. The company promotes flamenco as a living art form, a vital part of Hispanic heritage; creates quality new dance works and presents them in major theatrical venues; presents arts education programs that catalyze connections among people of different cultures; nurtures the next generation of Spanish dance artists and educators.
Flamenco arose in Andalucía, in southern Spain, evolving from the interaction of the Moorish, Jewish, Spanish and especially Gypsy peoples inhabiting the area. Rhythms from Northern Africa and South America have also made their way into the dance. Add to its virtuosity of movement an embrace of melodramatic themes—love, honor, passion, death—and the result is a theatrical experience of extraordinarily broad appeal.
In addition to performing in New York and nationally, Flamenco Vivo hosts classes and other educational opportunities for New York public school students and commissions new works as a means of nurturing future generations of flamenco artists.
Foreign-language Programs
All dance and music classes and performances will employ some level of Spanish-language terminology and song.
