Kid Fun in Grown-Up Museums

Art museums are smart. They know that in terms of creativity and imagination, kids have a lot in common with the artists featured on their walls. To acclimate kids to new ways of looking and discussing what they see, grown-up museums are tailoring programs to young people and their families. It's a great way to groom future museum-goers and artists.

The Whitney Museum of American Art impresses children with its very physical design. Entering the building is like crossing a bridge and walking into a giant sculpture with all kinds of art inside. In the magnificent galleries of Marcel Breuer's landmark building, children can explore modern masterpieces and discover what's new and compelling about art today.

    Hearing: See Access Services Desk for assistive listening devices (ALD) for programs and tours. Free American Sign Language interpreted tours first Saturday of each month (tour is voice-interpreted and preceded by a welcome reception at 3 pm). Film & Video Gallery has infrared assistive listening system. Works with ALD system are identified with an ALD label.
    Mobility: Wheelchairs are free of charge at coat check area.
    Vision: Large-print labels and brochures are at the Access Services Desk; call (212) 570-7789 to request publications in Braille. Free verbal description tours offered monthly or by request.
  • Gift Shops: Store Next Door at 943 Madison Avenue: furniture, jewelry and household objects by leading American artists, architects, craftsmen and designers; also art books, exhibition catalogs and posters; open 10 am-6 pm daily, Thurs until 8 pm.
  • On-Site Food: The cafe Sandwiched is open while the permanent dining space on the lower level of the museum is being renovated (set to open in fall of 2010).

Celebrated as a pioneer of turntablism, Marclay transforms sound and music into visual and physical forms through performance, collage, sculpture, large-scale installations, photography and video.

    Thurs, June 24, 2010 – Sun, Oct 17, 2010 Working almost exclusively in watercolor, Burchfield’s primary subject was landscape: his garden, the views from his windows, snow turning to slush, the sounds of insects and bells and vibrating telephone lines, deep ravines, sudden atmospheric changes, the experience of entering a forest at dusk, to name but a few.
