African Burial Ground

Discovered during excavation in the early 1990s, the Burial Ground is an 18th-century cemetery for people of color that stretches for nearly five blocks beneath the city's streets. It has provided historians with important artifacts and unprecedented insight into the life of colonial African-Americans. Visitors can view a portion of the site on Duane Street between Elk and Broadway, next to the Federal office building. The Office of Public Education and Interpretation (OPEI) offers lectures, guided tours and programs for families and schools.

Battery Dance Company
When not touring the world, this company takes its programs into the public schools. It is a fixture of lower Manhattan culture, sponsoring the annual Downtown Dance Festival each August.
The Battery Dance Company has introduced thousands of New York City public school students to the world of American modern dance and spreads artistic communication across borders with its International Exchange programs. Battery Dance brings dancers from all over the world to students through its in-school programs which include professional performances, dance technique classes and internships for high school students.

Battery Park City Parks Conservancy

Battery Park City Parks Conservancy offers public programming for families and school groups focused on ecology and environmental issues. Families can enjoy the outdoors together at Battery Park City Parks.
Family Winter Bird Walks Join birder/naturalists in observing some of the 80 varieties of birds whose migratory paths land them in Battery Park City's parks during winter. All ages welcome; meet at the conservatory headquarters at 2 South End Avenue. Children's Gardening in Rockefeller Park (located near the North Esplanade in Battery Park City): Children experience the joys of planting, cultivating and harvesting in this springtime gardening program. Registration is required (March-Oct). Go Fish: Children learn to catch fish, have the opportunity to closely observe them in salt water tanks, and learn about the biology of fish as well as Hudson River ecology. Meet in Robert F. Wagner, Jr. Park (Saturdays, starting in April).
The Conservancy's Marine Education Program provides catch-and-release fishing workshops to school groups from April to June at Robert F. Wagner, Jr. Park (grades 3-12). All supplies and equipment are provided. The workshop includes a talk about the history, geography and ecology of the Hudson River.

Big Onion Walking Tours|
Alliance for Downtown New York
Big Onion Walking Tours take participants through New York City's historic districts and ethnic neighborhoods. Tours can be arranged for adult as well as student groups and individuals can participate in "show-up" tours every weekend and holidays year-round.
WALL STREET WALKING TOURS This free guided tour takes visitors through the canyons of Wall Street. Weaving together the history, events, and architecture of Lower Manhattan. The tours cover the range from Wall Street to the Stone Street Historic District. Offered Thursdays and Saturdays at noon, the 90-minute tours leave from the front steps of the U.S. Custom House at One Bowling Green, also the home of the National Museum of the American Indian. Not available free for school groups, but families are welcome.

Conservancy for Historic Battery Park |
Battery Park has wonderful views of New York Harbor and 23 monuments and memorials celebrating New York City's history. During the summer the Conservancy holds free midday concerts on the Battery Park Lawn, and in conjunction with the Alliance for Downtown New York holds music performances at Castle Clinton during the month of July. Battery Park also serves as the embarkation point for the Circle Line/Statue of Liberty Ferry Harbor Cruise, which offers a guided tour around the tip of Manhattan, the Staten Island Ferry, and the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island ferry.

Eldridge Street Project

Responsible for the restoration of the Eldridge Street Synagogue, the project offers tours of the synagogue as well as cultural programming focused on Jewish heritage. Tours of the Eldridge Street Synagogue reveal the history, architecture and spiritual significance of the landmark building and its gateway neighborhood.
Students can learn about the holiday practices, objects and rituals during special workshops on the traditions of Purim (March Theater Madness) and Passover (Freedom Seders). In addition, workshops such as Writing, Drawing, Reflecting and Building and Rebuilding are available for classes. Reservations required.

Ellis Island Immigration Museum

Serving as the port-of-entry for more than 12 million immigrants to New York from 1892-1924, the Ellis Island Museum has 30 galleries filled with artifacts, historic photographs, posters, maps, oral histories and ethnic music. Individuals can go to the museum and research the history of their family's entry into the United States. The museum also has special curriculum-based programming for school groups that include pre- and post-visit activities. There are two ferries that take visitors to the museum: the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island ferry at South Ferry Terminal in Battery Park and the ferry leaving from Liberty State Park in New Jersey.

Federal Hall National Memorial

George Washington took the oath of office as the first president of the United States at this site when New York City was the nation's capital. Federal Hall offers exhibits on U.S. and New York history and is located across the street from the New York Stock Exchange.
Children have the unique opportunity to experience history at the annual reenactment of the inauguration of George Washington, which took place on this spot in 1793 and is held each year on April 29 starting at noon.

Fraunces Tavern Museum

Fraunces Tavern was once a meeting place for the American Revolution's great leaders, including George Washington. The rebuilt tavern is still a restaurant but now also houses a museum with exhibitions and programs focused on the lives of early Americans.
Families can visit the following exhibitions on view at the museum through May: Washington at War, based on George Washington's battle experiences; The Sons of the Revolution, war objects and documents with a special section on the history of the Tavern; and Colonists, Revolutionaries, Builders: Freemasons in America, Masonic artifacts from the revolutionary era. The museum also offers exhibition-related lectures.
Ideal for students studying the American Revolution and New York history, the museum offers school programs in conjunction with exhibitions.

Museum of Chinese in the Americas

Offering public programs for visitors of all ages, the museum celebrates Chinese American history and culture, both in New York and throughout the Americas.
Families can take a self-guided tour of the museum's current exhibition, Gateway to Gold Mountain (through May 31), that chronicles the immigration experience of thousands of Asians who came to America between 1910 and 1940. Self-guided walking tours take visitors through the streets of Chinatown, introducing them to the history of the many past residents of the area-Americans of African, Jewish and Irish descent-and its current Chinese residents.
Through its gallery programs for school groups, young visitors learn about the history of the Chinese in America. Groups can choose from several themes for their tour including family journeys, Chinese customs and traditions, the lunar New Year celebration and Chinatown through history.

Museum of Jewish Heritage - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust

The museum exhibits material recording the history of the Jewish people in the 20th century, emphasizing the experiences of Jewish Americans and the Holocaust.
Scream the Truth at the World (through Feb 18) New York's Living Memorial to the Holocaust presents artifacts from Emanuel Ringelblum's Hidden Archive of the Warsaw Ghetto, two-thirds of which was pulled from the rubble in 1946 and 1950 (a third cache has never been found). The archive includes personal testimonies, diary entries, photographs, art, letters and children's essays collected by a group of intellectuals in an attempt to document the events unfolding in Europe from 1939-1943.

Music From China

This music ensemble performs both traditional and contemporary Chinese music and opens its practice space to school groups by appointment.
The ensemble offers school group workshops that introduce students to fiddles, lutes, plucked zithers, bamboo flutes, reeded mouth organs and hammered dulcimers. Children may also experience the ancient sounds of the shoeing and the pipa or listen to the compelling music of the 900-year-old er-hu. School group workshops include lectures about traditional Chinese music and traditional Chinese instruments and the opportunity to play.

South Street Seaport Museum

A museum of New York's maritime history, located in its traditional home next to the Brooklyn Bridge. Exhibition galleries and lecture rooms come to life on real ships-the Pioneer and Peking-anchored nearby in the East River. Visitors can also enjoy exhibitions at New York Unearthed, the museum's off-site urban archaeology center located at 17 State Street.
This spring the South Street Seaport Museum is holding a variety of programs for children and families. Abstraction Reactions (Saturdays Jan 5-26) an abstract art workshop that examines the work of artist Frank Stella; Sailor Valentines (Saturday, Feb 2 and 9), a revival of the lost folk art of sailor valentine making; Sea Turtle Egg Hunt (March 30), crafts and games aboard the tall ship Peking; Celebrate the Earth Day! (April 20), harbor program aboard the Peking; Spring Launchings (May 4), volunteer to help ready the museum's fleet of nine historic vessels for the sailing season (reservation needed for this workshop).
Interdisciplinary, curriculum-based school programs are offered to school groups using the history and ecology of the Hudson River as a framework for workshops in which children can become "sailors-in-training" aboard the historic Peking. Younger students can learn how to tie knots and raise a sail. Older students can learn navigation and sail handling. (Overnight trips are available.) Tribeca Performing Arts Center is home to the popular family weekend series Family Folk & Fairy Tales and the Schooltime series and also presents international theater, dance and music performances. The Family Folk & Fairy Tales series will include Song of Mulan (April 13), an ancient Chinese legend set to music, The House at Pooh Corner (May 11), and The Wizard of Oz (June 1).
The Schooltime Series presents literary classics, shows that explore the culture and customs of other countries and shows that help to illuminate the human condition of our society in ways relevant to children. The towering spire of Trinity Church sitting at the corner of Broadway and Wall Street, a block from the New York Stock Exchange. NOONDAY CONCERTS Trinity Church offers musical programming throughout the year. Take advantage of the Noonday Concerts, actually at 1 pm, that take place on Mondays and Thursdays. Saint Paul's Noonday Concerts, held at 12 pm on Mondays, will resume this spring.
SUNDAY CONCERTS On selected Sundays at 3 pm, the Trinity Choir and Orchestra perform two full-length concerts.

Arts & Events Programming
The World Financial Center's glorious Winter Garden Theater will reopen in June for its Art & Events Program. The Fifth Annual Hudson River Festival will include modern dance, music and theater performances, visual arts and family programs. All events are free and take place in the parks and public spaces of Battery Park City, including World Financial Center Plaza, Rockefeller and Wagner Parks and the Esplanade.
