In tribute to the men and women lost in the tragic attack on New York City on September 11, 2001, Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, a distinguished Smithsonian affiliate, has reopened its 9/11 Tribute Center.  Designed as a place for quiet reflection, the permanent installation will be manned by FDNY firefighters from Rescue Five and is open every week from 10 am to 4 pm, Wednesday through Sunday.

Originally dedicated on September 14, 2003, the educational display is in Building N, in the heart of Snug Harbor’s grounds. Through artifacts, pictures and multimedia displays—including a memorial wall of Staten Islanders who perished in the attack—the Center creates a sense of shared commonality in the tragedy. The center and garden is home to many cultural groups and attractions, including the Staten Island Children's Museum and the Noble Maritime Museum. A combo ticket provides access to the New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden, the Connie Gretz Secret Garden, Main Hall, Building C galleries and the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art.

    Ongoing Students observe a variety of mythological images gracing the buildings of the Snug Harbor site-with a special fcous on the historic constellation windows in the visitors center-and discuss sailors' myths associated with them. They then devise their own original constellation and write a brief myth explaining its "origin."
