Studio Museum in Harlem
A cornerstone of The Studio Museum in Harlem’s collection is the artwork of Romare Bearden, a 20th century master of the visual arts, who was instrumental in the founding of this museum.
"The Bearden Project” was launched in September 2011 to celebrate the centennial of Bearden’s birth. On view through September, 2012, it showcases works by contemporary artists who have been influenced by Bearden's use of collage as a means of personal reflection and social commentary.
In creating works inspired by Bearden’s life and legacy, the artists have mined collage, Modernism, jazz and urbanism. For examplke, artist Kira Lynn Harris—who is known for mixeing video, photography and drawing—pays homage to Bearden with a chalk on black paint installation.
The museum collects, researches and interprets the work of African-American artists and artists of African descent. It is the nexus for artists of African descent---locally, nationally and internationally---and for work that has been inspired and influenced by black culture.
