The 585-acre park is one of the finest creations of the landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. Begun in 1866, it has a 60-acre lake on its east side, the 90-acre Long Meadow on the west and Brooklyn's last remaining original woodlands (the Ravine) in between.

The Dairy is a Gothic Revival structure located between the Zoo and the Carousel. Built in 1870, it serves as the park's information center and houses exhibits about the design, architecture and history of the park. The Dairy offers educational events, tours for adults, concerts and exhibits.
