Slavery and the Underground Railroad

This interdisciplinary 90-minute program is held at the Kingsland Homestead in Flushing, Queens. In 1799, Charles Doughty was the first slave owner in the area to free a slave. Students use historic documents such as colonial-era slave ads and manumission papers to discuss the practice of slavery in the United States. Pre- and post-visit lesson plan materials are available.
